What is 1680D Ballistic Nylon?

First off, why is this fabric called “ballistic?” Well, that name gained popularity during the Vietnam war because denier fabric was used for anti-fragmentation ballistic jackets.

During war, layers upon layers of ballistic nylon where laminated on top of each other to create durable but flexible vests and jackets that protected armed forces from exploding metal.

Ballistic nylon was first developed by the DuPont corporation for flak jackets worn by airmen in World War II. At the time, it was not an effective barrier to bullets nor any other artillery.

In the late 1970’s, the government switched use to lightweight Kevlar embedded with ceramic plates that could stop bullets. By the 1980’s, consumers had access to ballistic fabric.

Use this durable, affordable fabric for a variety of products, including luggage. As luggage gets tossed around and handled, this durable fabric material does not rip or tear. The look of the weave is shiny, sleek and sexy. Even though the name stuck – the military doesn’t use ballistic fabric for those purposes anymore.

You might notice that 1680D ballistic nylon isn’t available in many colors. That’s because it is very hard to dye. Most often, ballistic nylon is only available in black.  Width tolerance +/- .5″.

What is “Denier?”

Denier is how someone refers to the weight of the yarn used in denier. But please note, it’s NOT an indicator of strength.

For instance, a fabric that is 1000D weighs 1000 grams for 9000 meters of yarn. A little strange, we know. Likewise, 1680D weighs 1680 grams per 9000 meters of yarn.

1680D Ballistic Nylon Fabric vs. Cordura

You’ll see these two fabrics talked about together all the time. Basically, ballistic nylon weights more than Cordura. Generally, ballistic nylon is stronger and has better tear strength.

Compared to ballistic fabric, Cordura fabric looks more like canvas. Ballistic fabric, however, has a shiny look to it. In addition to a pleasing look, ballistic nylon doesn’t’ tend to pile like Cordura, so it does not readily attract lint or dust.

When you see Cordura, you think school backpacks and hiking bags while ballistic nylon is better suited for high-quality, premium products.

Although you may use this project for everyday projects, consider your need. It’s truly ideal for outdoor projects that need great tensile strength or to haul heavy loads.

Also, neither fabric has any safe application for military use except for possibly in that of attire or packs. The military has their own way of vetting the proper fabrics for their use.

Now let’s talk about how everyday consumers can use ballistic fabric for sewing projects at home.
