The Benefits of a Black Sketchbook

Black paper sketchbooks aren‰’t uncommon. While white paper sketchbooks are traditionally utilized, a black paper sketchbook add some interesting elements to an artist‰’s work.

The color black works best to pop other colors off of a page. Using a black paged sketchbook assists in the colors you‰’re working with to look deeper and more vibrant. It adds a unique level as well.

Artwork made on black pages is a creative challenge! Most are so used to white paper, but black paper adds a level of mystique that can make sketching fun once more.

Overall, whatever your material, black paper sketchbooks add an element of surprise to every single thing you’ll sketch.

Watercolor Painting on Black Paper

Khadi paper is kind to all sorts of materials. From oil paints to pencil, anything is usable with its porous surface that will keep your work preserved for years to come. With our black paper sketchbooks, you are able to also use watercolors.

Watercolor painting on black paper is possible! While it requires some practice, watercolor paint will show up against this beautiful black khadi paper. Create any kind of work you want with this sketchbook.

Watercolors vs. Gouache

Whether watercolors or gouache paint, watercolor painting on black paper intensifies the artwork! Watercolors and gouache paint are made from similar materials, but they have slight differences.

Watercolor paint is more transparent than gouache paint. Sometimes, artists will mix a watercolor paint with a white gouache paint to thicken or add some more opacity to a watercolor.

Gouache paints can be chunky or thicker. Gouache paint is highly pigmented and that color is ground into the base.

All in all, each paint medium works well for painting within the pages of our khadi sketchbook.

The Challenge of Sketching on Black Paper

Creating art on black paper is often called ‰working in reverse.‰  For beginners, we suggest starting your colors off light and building up your pencil or paint. Why? Because black is the darkest tone. So, here you’re working our lightness up instead of your depth.

It‰’s not a conventional artistic exercise, but it sure is a fun one! Read on to learn more about sketching and painting on black paper.

Black paper isn‰’t very forgiving, and it‰’s hard to erase because you start digging deeper into the paper. So, at Canvas ETC, we suggest planning your illustration in advance.

A good tool to help you gets started is a soapstone pencil. This is usually used by quilters to mark fabric. However, it also looks great on black paper! It‰’s ideal for making yourself guidelines and it rubs away when you don‰Ûªt need them anymore (no erasure needed).

If using pastels, watch out for pastel dust since the black provides a high contrast.

The Best 3 Media for a Black Sketchbook

Colored Pencils

These don’t HAVE to be white. If you have good quality pencils, most bright colors will show up nicely. Not familiar with brands and quality? Ask someone in the art department at your local craft shop.

White Gel Pens

These are very affordable. You can get a good white gel pen for around $1.50 in most craft stores. Test out a few different ones to check for opacity.

Gouache Paint

Gouache is a type of paint that is centuries old. People don’t use it as often anymore, but it has some great characteristics. Pronounced gwosh, gouache is what some often call an opaque watercolor for its traits. This paint consists of natural pigment, water and some type of binding agent (like gum arabic).

Tips for Drawing on Black Paper

  • Plan your drawing in advance to avoid mistakes and to make sure the color POPS.
  • Use colored pencils or charcoal if you prefer dry media. With them, you can slowly build volume with traditional shading techniques. Sharpen your pencils to give yourself more of an edge with bright white color.
  • You can use pens too, but watch out for opaque inks that may not stand out enough against the dark paper. So, we suggest using white gel pens.
  • Watercolors tend to fade on white paper. If you‰’d like to paint, check out gouache. It has both acrylic and watercolor traits that create bright, luminous pieces.

Different Styles of Watercolor Paper

Khadi paper is the watercolor paper alternative, however traditional watercolor paper options are available as well. Typically, watercolor paper is either hot press or cold press paper. They are also processed in varied weights.

Hot press watercolor paper refers to the finishing process of said sheets of paper. This version of watercolor paper is thicker than cold pressed paper and is made smooth by pressing it within a hot paper press. The sheets become finished to be as smooth as traditional paper.

Cold press watercolor paper also refers to its finishing process. This paper finishes in a vat of cold water which creates a style of rough paper. Thinner than hot press paper, cold press watercolor paper soaks colors faster than hot press paper because of the surface.

The weight of a watercolor grade paper varies based on how it’s processed. Heavier sheets like 300 pound paper do not require stretching before painting. Stretching sheets under 140 pound is common due to the fact that the paper usually curls or becomes slightly deformed by the watercolor art supply itself.

Although art papers style themselves in particular varieties, each serve a succinct purpose. While traditional watercolor paper is good for most artists, the benefits of khadi paper make for an essential watercolor paper alternative to use in all watercolor projects.

Khadi Paper: Watercolor Paper Alternative

As mentioned, khadi paper handcrafted in India occurs with the help of artisan paper makers. This fine quality paper is natural and acid free. The process of turning cotton rag to khadi sheets is interesting and makes for a perfect watercolor paper alternative.

Khadi paper’s processing is unique and environmentally conscious. Derived from recycled cotton t-shirt clippings, it’s pulled apart to extract the cotton pulp which later becomes paper. The water used in the processing of khadi paper assists local farmer’s crops by being recycled and later used in agricultural irrigation.

Unlike traditionally made wood pulp paper which forms on a continuous roll, khadi papers form sheet by sheet in a surface sized tub. Sometimes, when the pages are over formed they leave behind what’s called a deckled edge. This edge gives the paper a true artisan feel.

When khadi sheets gain their shape, they’re pressed between woolen felt or zinc. Papers pressed with the felt leave behind a slight rough texture, while zinc pressed sheets are smooth. After pressing, those used for watercoloring become coated in gelatin.

The gelatin coating promote the working above the surface of the sheet. This allows for not only watercolors, but also various art materials like oil paints or acrylic paints. Overall, khadi papers are great for many forms of art work to materialize on its sheets.

Art Materials Used with Khadi Paper

Khadi papers are so versatile that their use extends over many different art materials. For artists, a paper that is able to do it all is ideal. This fine art paper does just that.

As we’ve learned, khadi papers work great as a watercolor paper alternative. This means that if you’re a watercolorist who’s used to working with watercolor blocks, you may also use khadi paper for your watercoloring. The paper is durable and depending on the weight doesn’t require stretching like most watercolor sheets.

As stated, khadi paper also works with various paints like oil and acrylic. You can also coat the paper in gesso prior to painting. The heavier the sheet, the least likely it is to require a backing to maintain its shape.

It also is great for the sketch artist! Our khadi sketchbooks were made for the conceptual artist. If pen, pencil, charcoal or other drawing forms are your preference, khadi sheets are key.

All in all, no matter brush, pen, pencil, or otherwise– khadi papers can carry your prized artwork with pride.

Artist Tips When Watercolor Painting

Whether you’re a professional watercolor artist or budding watercolorist, there are certain tips that help your artwork come to life with ease:

  1. Keep Your Paper Fresh: Firstly, you want to start with fresh paper. If you’re repainting on the back of already used paper, your sheet may wrinkle depending on the thickness of the sheet itself. Use fresh sheets of our watercolor paper alternative offering, khadi paper.
  2. Spend a Little On Your Tools: You’re also going to want to invest some money in your tools. If you’re painting for fun, you may not see this as a big deal, but supplies that are a little more costly than your basic tools go a long way. Do a quick search on mid-tier supplies like brushes and paint for your watercoloring needs.
  3. Keep Your Space Organized: Once you’re supplies are in place, keep them organized! Having all the materials you need like extra paper, paint, brushes, water, scraping tools and more can be easily disorganized with each painting session. Using trays, old boxes, cups and other containers will keep your tools accessible and keep you focused on your art!
  4. When In Doubt, Sketch It Out: Not sure about your vision? Sketch it first! As previously mentioned, our khadi papers are great with all tools, so grab a pencil and eraser and sketch your idea before applying the paint. This allows for editing your work to perfect your final product.
  5. Have FUN!: Creating art is a fun and often cathartic experience. Remember that as you paint and you’ll enjoy it for years to come.

These tips and many more help your art become a reality. Overall, watercolor painting can be an exciting and amazing experience when you apply your paint to the page!

Plus, they‰Ûªre a statement piece that will house your exclusive art for many time to come.

No matter the style or type, khadi paper India is ideal for any creative person looking to expand into an interesting medium.

Khadi Paper India Roots

Looking back in time, the first traces of cotton based paper used in India dates all the way back to the 4th century! Used primarily for letter writing, this rough surfaced version of khadi was born on various fleets of ships. Today, it serves for entirely different purposes.

With the rise of traditional paper came certain set backs. Paper made from wood pulp, although universally utilized, was not as strong as rag papers like khadi paper. To this day, printed money doesn‰’t derive from basic paper– it‰Ûªs made with a cotton and linen blend!

Fibers like cotton or linen are naturally strong and stand against wear and tear. Khadi paper India provides that same strength and durability unlike its plain paper counterpart.

Also, the production of khadi paper allowed for some semblance of balance to the Indian economy. It gave local artists the ability to work on its manufacturing and distribution globally.

How Rag Papers are Made

The production of khadi paper india is a fascinating process. To start, the papers are first cotton rags. These cotton rags are sought from various forms.

Whether they’re used from recycled clothing like t-shirts or otherwise, the rags are initially pulped. Pulping happens with the assistance of a Hollander beater, which collects the pulp needed for the paper. Next, the pH becomes balanced, making the paper acid free.

The khadi paper is tub sized surface sized because it is handmade sheet by sheet, and not on a roll. The paper forms into a mold to then lay out to dry. If the paper‰’s mold over forms, deckle edges form on the perimeters of the page..

Depending on how the pulp is initially processed, the paper will have a rough or smooth surface. Also, once the pulping process ends, khadi papers that are meant to have color go through their dyeing process. Overall, this handmade process helps create amazing work for the artisans of India.

Cotton Rag Paper and the Environment

Not only does khadi paper India support Indian families and citizens alike, it’s also made sustainably. The paper is made eco-consciously with minor impact to the environment.åÊkhadi paper india cotton

The water used in the production of cotton rag paper collects from wells and rainwater. When it goes through the papermaking cycle, it‰’s recycled for irrigation use. This helps local land cultivators grow and sustain their own businesses.

The paper itself does not harm any trees. In fact, the cotton fibers aren‰Ûªt even taken from their plants; they’re upcycled from old garments!

All in all, the production of khadi paper doesn‰Ûªt only produce unique, high quality sheets of paper– it also helps the planet.

Khadi Paper‰’s Impact

As previously mentioned, purchasing khadi paper sends a ripple effect in many different ways. Most importantly, khadi paper India assists a large amount of people in India financially.

India houses an abundant amount of people from different socioeconomic backgrounds. The establishments that manufacture khadi paper base themselves as an equal opportunity endeavor, allowing for a wonderful balance of many artisans hand making paper.

They stimulate different economies as well. Not only does the creation of khadi paper assist the community, but different types of businesses as well. The textile and agricultural sectors in India benefit from khadi papers by the contributions given and received from its manufacture.

Overall, khadi paper helps the people help not only themselves, but others. Therefore, the impact assists not only economically, but socially as well.

For decades, if not hundreds of years, artisans have turned to khadi paper to complete their work. This handmade paper is very unique and was seen as the premier paper for artistic endeavors. Read below to find out more about Khadi paper, its history and its uses.

Wood Pulp Paper

The kind of paper that most people are familiar with is nothing like khadi paper. Regular paper is made from trees. Some paper makers also use raw materials like bamboo, hemp or flax.

These raw materials contain cellulose and lignin. The lignin holds the cellulose together by acting like a kind of glue. The process of making paper washes away the lignin and allows the cellulose to be restructured.

This process makes use of wood pulp, or pulverized wood and water. Chemicals are used to process the pulp, and the end result is a paper sheet. These sheets can be huge but are processed down to proper thickness and size. In the final steps, wood producers can introduce dyes for color or other chemicals for stabilization.

How Traditional Handmade Paper is Created

Traditional handmade paper follows a similar process to today‰’s wood paper. The difference is usually in processing the pulp and in the materials.

Many traditional handmade papers do not make use of wood. While wood has become a very popular material for modern paper, traditionalists still use other fiber. Use of fibers like hemp or bamboo allows for handmade paper to be tree-free.handmade paper 2

Many people like knowing that their paper is tree-free because it is better for the environment. Of modern tree pulp paper, trees obviously have to be cut down. This clearcutting of our natural forest has lead to much criticism. The use of handmade paper is just one we people can contribute to more sustainable practices.

Handmade paper also uses the natural cellulose of the plant it is made from. This allows papermakers to produce a completely natural paper.

The use of wood pulp for papermaking has only been used somewhat recently, but now most paper is made of wood pulp. While wood pulp paper is cheap, it can‰’t beat the feel and useability of traditional handmade paper.

What is Rag Paper

Rag paper is another name for cotton paper. Cotton papers are not as common as wood pulp papers, but are of much better quality. Cotton Rag paper is usually able to last for hundreds of years without fading or deteriorating.

Many people use rag paper. Government agencies use rag paper for important documents. Archival documents are often printed on rag paper. Another important use for rag paper is in the production of money. This is useful because rag paper resists deterioration and distortion.

Rag paper is also pressed to different grades, usually in quarter increments. Paper that is graded 100% cotton can also sometimes contain acid. This paper should be tested before being used in archival documents.

Rag paper is used to print currency because it is some of the best paper to be had.

What is Khadi Paper?

Khadi paper is a different kind of rag paper.

These handmade papers are made of cotton rag. This means that khadi paper is actually made of recycled t-shirt cuttings.

The cotton rag is much longer than linters cotton. The strength and durability of khadi paper is in its long fibres. Having these long fibers means that there are less chance of a strand to unravel, which would lead to failure and breakage.

The cotton rags are also produced with a neutral pH size. This provides a product that is truly acid free.

When producing works of art, the pH of your paper should be considered. Acids in the paper may deteriorate your work. It may also cause your finished product to wear more quickly. Using a neutral pH size provides the strongest and safest foundation for a painting.

Why Choose Handmade Paper?

From clothes, to furniture or even knives, many people prefer having an item that is handmade. Some simply prefer owning an item that is unique to them.

When you hire an artisan to make a product for you, you know it is special. You know a person actually took time and care when producing the item. You know it was money well spent.

The same is true when you purchase khadi paper. This paper is handmade. It‰’s also only made in one place by one group of people. Working with this handmade paper is a a treat in itself.

Handmade paper is also an eco-friendly choice. When modern papers are produced, chemicals and dyes are added. This in turn harms the environment. The production of handmade paper does not use chemicals. You can use your paper knowing it produces less of an impact on the environment.

Our khadi paper is also produced using recycled shirts. Not only does this reuse something that has come to its end of life, but khadi paper lives on as a prime choice for discerning artists.

How To Use Khadi Paper

For artists who are just starting to use khadi paper, there are usually some questions. Some people are unfamiliar with this paper and are unsure of which medium this paper is best suited.

Many people have said that khadi paper is appropriate for a large number of mediums. Many people choose to keep a khadi paper sketchpad for their drawings. The textured paper makes many drawings look even more interesting.

Other artists have had success with water colors when using wet-on-wet technique. Some find that khadi paper is “thirsty,” meaning that it soaks up a lot of water. Again, this is fine for using wet techniques, however it can soak up a lot of pigment otherwise.

Many people also choose to use gesso to cover the paper and make a great surface for paint work. While this is not necessary for painting, it can help give more of a uniform surface.

Incredible Texture of Handmade Paper

Handmade paper is like a work of art in itself. It doesn’t have as uniform a texture as other forms of paper. Because of this , many artists say the paper produces “happy accidents.” These small imperfections if the paper help give it a life of its own.

Many artists prefer their paper have a bit of texture. Khadi paper certainly has an excellent texture. It will be the perfect backing for any of your artistic endeavors.

Khadi Paper Style and Weight

Handmade paper is able to come in all styles and wights and even shapes. Khadi paper commonly comes in 100 LB, 140 LB, or 300 LB weight. This means that the “heavier” a papers weight is, the thicker the paper will be.

If you’re looking for handmade paper to do pencil or charcoal drawing, a lower weight would suffice. If you’re doing watercolor or other paints, consider getting a heavier weight paper. Though, this is not a rule. Experiment with your art and make something unique!

Canvas ETC Has a Large Selection of Handmade Paper

Sketching is a long time hobby and passion for most artists. Sketchbooks date back to the beginning of time; some of the first sketches done happened upon stone or on parchment made from animals like sheep or goats!

Basic sketching began as an approach to place ideas onto a medium. Ink itself was made from many items found in nature like berries or even graphite rock. To this day, many offerings of ink become obtained from natural things like plant matter and minerals.

Sketching brought shape to a creative person’s overall concept of their work. It also allowed for a final product. Many people turned to sketching as a form of documentation as well.

All in all, the need for a good sketchbook was key throughout time. It served as the timeline for an artist’s overall art journey.

Famous Sketchbook Holders

Sketchbooks are for any artist, no matter how well known. However, throughout time there have been many famous artist who’ve also relied on sketchbooks to produce some of the most well known artwork today. Some famous sketchbook holders were:

  • Leonardo Da Vinci: Leonardo Da Vinci is most famously known for his two pieces The Last Supper and Mona Lisa. Each piece is oil on canvas, but Leonardo was also a sketch artist with various art materials.
  • Vincent Van Gogh: Van Gogh is not only known best for removing his own ear, but he also created famous paintings like The Starry Night and Bedroom in Arles. This Amsterdam based artist worked first with watercolor paints, but then painted with a vast art supply later.
  • Francisco Goya: Known just as well as Van Gogh or Da Vinci, Spanish born artist Francisco Goya created his artwork between Italy and Spain. He‰’s creation of La Maja Desnuda caused an uproar in the world for it‰’s realism and in your face frankness of the human form. His sketching helped him create some more well known paintings such as the The Colossus or The Second of May, 1808.
  • Pablo Picasso: Arguably one of the more famous painters of the 20th century, Picasso’s expressive drawings and paintings made for famous works like The Old Guitarist. At his death, 45 of his 175 sketchbooks became released from his estate and put on display in a New York City gallery for the world to see his musings.

The world’s most famous painters and artists have relied on sketchbooks! No matter the medium, sketchbooks assist an artist to elevate their artwork overall.

Watercoloring: A History

As with many art forms, watercoloring dates back to ancient times. It’s argued that watercolor paintings are found in the ancient cave drawings of long ago. Many different materials from plant matter to rock minerals became utilized as early options for watercolor art supply.

Watercoloring was an art form highly utilized during the Northern Renaissance period. Prior to the Renaissance that spread along countries like Italy and France, counties north of the Swiss Alps experienced their Renaissance period. Artists like Albrecht Durer transformed artwork through watercoloring during this time in history.

In England, watercoloring rose to popularity during the 18th century. The mark of an affluent or wealthy person was that of one who was well versed in many things, including watercoloring. The art form took off and marked a person as elite if they were proficient in the skill set of watercoloring.

In the United States, watercoloring with watercolor paper pad took off during the 19th century. As it did in parts of Europe, artists were born from this new form of painting. While watercoloring hadn’t been something new for most of the world, it was being discovered in each place as the new and exciting way to create.

Well Known Watercolorists

As previously mentioned, watercoloring performed in the early Renaissance period all the way until the 20th and 21st centuries occurred at the hand of interesting and usually affluent people alike. Some better known watercolor paper pad artists who were also watercolorists are:

  • Georgia O’Keeffe: Known for elaborately large floral paintings, the American artist Georgia O’Keeffe began as a watercolorist before moving to other mediums. Her watercolor works painted in the early 1900’s and depicted everything from body forms to landscapes.
  • Albrecht Durer: German artist Albrecht Durer was an early Renaissance painter who also dabbled with watercolors. His natural landscape work and animal portraits painted into sketchbooks also made it on watercolor papers as well.
  • Charles Demuth: American watercolorist Charles Demuth was primarily a water color painter and later became an oil painter. His work showcased many things from nautical life to abstract paintings.
  • John Marin: This modernist watercolorist began his painting career after going to school later in life. His work happened after he turned 30 years old. He learned his watercoloring skills in Europe, although he was an American artist. He painted amazing landscapes.

There were also better known traditional painters like Van Gogh who also dabbled in watercolor painting. Overall, watercolors have proven to be a medium treasured by many.

How Watercolors Are Made

Watercolor paints are interesting in that they are able to be made at home or by a manufacturer! Based on your preference, you can buy watercolors at your local art supply store or gather the materials needed to make your own colors.

Watercolors, like all paints become mixed with certain materials. One of the main ingredients in a watercolor paint is gum arabic. This natural gum is actually hardened tree sap! The sap collects from the acacia tree.

The acacia tree is native to Australia, where most of their 981 species are found. This ancient tree has been around for centuries and has served many purposes like making watercolor paint or even fuel!

The gum arabic acts as a binder for the other ingredients like pigment and preservatives like glycerin. The pigment itself can derive from anything like botanical matter or synthetic materials.

If you choose to make your own, you’d want to have on hand some pigment, gum arabic, an essential oil like clove or thyme to act as a preservative, and honey. When mixed together, grab your watercolor paper pad and go to town!

Watercolors & Gouache Colors

Similar to watercolors, gouache paint is often used with watercolor paper pad sketchbooks as well. Gouache paint is another form of water-based media.

Gouache colors are made similarly to watercolors, however the pigmentation used is all natural. This opaque paint has been utilized for centuries and works well by itself or as an additive with watercolor paint. When used, it dries quickly and with a matte finish.

As both materials are water based and used with water, when they’re used together, the paint appears more vividly. If you’re using your watercolor paper pad and want to create a bright print, using watercolors and gouache paint together gives you the effect you’re looking for.

Unlike watercolors, gouache paints dry slightly different than their originating colors. When lighter colors dry, they may dry slightly darker, and when darker colors dry, they may be slightly lighter. It makes it difficult to match the paint if you decide to paint the same piece in various sessions.

All in all, while there are slight differences between gouache colors and watercolors, they’re very similarly used. Each paint medium ultimately depends on what works best for the artist.

Watercolor Paper Pad Styles

A watercolor paper pad is perfect for a budding watercolorist. Depending on your artwork need, paper selection varies. Artist papers and paper pads help the artist create amazing works to display.

Paper quality for a watercolorist is important. A varied series watercolor pad serves a proper function for a committed artist, but various styles of artist papers allow the artist to create within a wider spectrum.

The weight of watercolor pages is up to the artist’s preference as well. The heavier the paper, the more the sheet can absorb the color. Lighter paper (like 140 pound) is great for watercoloring as well but require stretching for the paper not to wrinkle once it dries.

Watercolor pages style themselves differently based on the artist’s needs. Most watercolor paper pads have textured pages, which occur when cold pressed surface paper is made. Once cold pressed paper processes, it’s then submerged in cold water to create a raised effect.

Whether textured, smoothed, wire bound pages or free formed pages, some of the best paper quality for a watercolor paper pad is found within the sheets of khadi paper. Khadi sheets, like those found in our hardback sketchbook HB5W are acid free and textured to allow for great soaking of your watercolor medium.

Khadi papers are handmade and very versatile for any artist. Whether you’re just starting as a watercolorist or are an expert watercolor painter, khadi sheets are great for watercolors.

Art Materials for Watercoloring

Other than watercolors and watercolor paper pad, an artist creates their work with various art materials for watercoloring. From brushes to tape, so many wonderful materials work well with watercolor painting.

One of the more interesting materials for watercoloring is masking fluid. This tape bound option adheres, dries, and lifts from areas of your painting you don’t wish to have color. It keeps your already painted surfaces safe as well.

Another wonderful accessory for watercoloring are scraping and lifting tools like sponges, sandpaper, palette scrapers, Xacto knives and more. These tools assist with lifting and scraping your applications as you work to create some texture and depth.

A well used item is archival spray. Once you’ve finished your work, archival spray acts as a finishing touch to keep your watercolor intact. While khadi paper properties are durable and long lasting, archival spray adds an extra benefit to your finished artwork.

The Process of Making Paper

While Khadi paper is known for being some of the best watercolor paper you can find, not many people outside the art world know what makes this paper unique. To the average person, paper is paper, right? Well, ignorance is bliss, but there is power in knowledge and experience.

Khadi paper is a completely different type of paper for artists. Normal paper, like what you might send through a home use printer is made of wood pulp. This wood pulp is harvested from trees, bamboo, hemp or even flax. Because these raw materials are made from plants they contain cellulose and lignin.

Lignin acts like a kind of glue. It holds the cellulose together. Paper is made by washing away the lignin. After it has been washed, the remaining cellulose can be reformed. The remaining material is mixed with chemicals and turned into what you know today as a sheet of paper.

Paper can be made in practically any shape or size or thickness. Paper manufacturers also add dyes for making colored paper or other chemicals to stabilize the paper. This is fine for xeroxed copies, but some people prefer to not have chemicals in their paper.

Processing Khadi Paper is a very different process!

While on the surface, producing Khadi paper might seem similar to making regular tree pulp paper. Yes, Khadi paper and tree pulp paper are both washed, but that’s the only real similarity.

For starters, traditional Khadi paper is not made from tree pulp. There has even been much criticism lately about cutting down our natural forests for paper or lumber. Khadi paper makes use of a much more renewable material.

This artisan paper is made of rags. This is why it is referred to as rag paper as well. Often times this paper is made of old t-shirts. For many environmentally conscious consumers, the fact that Khadi paper repurposes a used material is part of the allure of it.

Knowing that something like clothing has come to its end of useful life, and that it is being turned into something of use rather than being thrown out is a nice bonus. For artists, the fact that Khadi paper is also acid free is even better. Being acid free makes Khadi paper the best watercolor paper because it will not effect what is painted.

Uses for Rag Paper

Many artists choose to use rag paper because it is one of the best watercolor papers available. But this special paper has found use in other industries as well. Because rag paper is made without the use of chemicals, it is extremely stable. This is why it is commonly used to print currency.

Rag paper has also found use for archival documents. Many government agencies worldwide use rag paper for important documents. Rag paper resists deterioration and distortion, so it is the perfect choice for these documents.

This paper is pressed to different grades denoting the percentage of cotton that is used. While the paper is usually chemical free, rag paper rated at 100% can contain acid. So if you’re using it for important documents, be sure to check before using it for your important documents.

Khadi Paper Used in Art

Khadi paper has become known as the best watercolor paper for good reason. The handmade nature of the paper means that each book is unique. Actually, each page is pretty special too!

These books are not mass produced. They have been made by paper artisans to me used by artists. Not uniqueness of these books comes from them being handmade.

Some Khadi paper books can have a rough finish that is great for artists who like to use wet-on-wet techniques. If that is not your style, many painters choose to start with a gesso as a base coat. This can help the paper resist being so “thirsty,” as people have called it.

Because the paper is sized at the pulp stage, the smooth finish paper can also resist moisture. This works well when you don’t want your watercolor to soak into the paper.

While Khadi paper is regarded as the best watercolor paper, it has also found use in many other mediums. People enjoy using oils on Khadi paper. Though, an acrylic gesso is a good starting point to make a more uniform surface. Many people also choose to forgo any gesso and just use Khadi paper as-is. It all depends on your own preference and what your planned end result it.

Even artists who do not paint have expressed their enjoyment of using Khadi paper. It has become an excellent choice for those who do ink, pencil or even charcoal drawing.

Unique Texture of Khadi Paper

One of the things that artists continually comment on is the unique texture of Khadi paper. After being used to using materials like canvas or even mass produced watercolor paper, artists fall in love with Khadi paper.

The surface of handmade paper naturally is nonuniform. This has lead to what many artists call “happy accidents”.  The small imperfections of the paper lead to some spots that are higher or lower than other, some spots are thicker or thinner. This leads to the paper taking on a kind of life of its own.

The unique texture of Khadi paper is something that gives the art drawn on it a kind of living, breathing attribute. It’s certain to enhance any art that is drawn or painted on its surface.

Khadi Paper Weight and Style

Khadi paper is a very particular choice. Artists also make a deliberate decision to use Khadi paper.

This paper come in many different styles and weights. Normally it comes in either 100lb, 140lb, or 300lb weight. The different weights often correspond to the thickness of the paper. Thought, this is not always a rule. Really the weight tells you how much 500 sheets of the uncut paper would weight. With Khadi paper, because it is handmade and each page is different, these measurement can only be used against other Khadi paper. So, in other words, don’t measure Khadi paper weight against regular paper.

If you’re planning to use Khadi paper for charcoal or pencil drawing, we would recommend a lower weight. If you are doing oils and plan on using a gesso, a middle or heavier weight would be best. And if you’re looking for the best watercolor paper, a heavy weight is usually recommended to help soak up your work.

Of course these are just recommendations. Your work is as unique as you are. Feel free to experiment and find what works best for you!
